This Saturday, as Barnsley hosts Cambridge United at Oakwell Stadium, we have an opportunity to come together in a heartfelt tribute to Simon Dobbin—a fellow football supporter whose story has touched many.
Ten years ago, on March 21, 2015, Simon attended an away match between Cambridge United and Southend United. Tragically, following the game, he was the victim of an unprovoked attack that left him with severe brain damage, rendering him unable to walk or talk and requiring 24-hour care. Despite the immense challenges he faced, Simon's spirit remained resilient until his passing in October 2020.
In memory of Simon and to mark the decade since the incident, Cambridge United supporters have proposed a unified gesture during our upcoming match. They invite both Barnsley and Cambridge fans to participate in a minute's applause in the 10th minute of the game, accompanied by chants of "There's only one Simon Dobbin," reminiscent of the tributes paid to him at the Abbey Stadium.
Football is more than just a game; it's a community where camaraderie and mutual respect should prevail. By joining in this tribute, we not only honor Simon's memory but also stand in solidarity against violence in our sport. It's a poignant reminder that every fan deserves to return home safely after supporting their team.
Let's come together this Saturday to celebrate the life of Simon Dobbin and reinforce the values that make football a sport of unity and passion.
